General Information

The public housing program offers tenants a home in communities managed by Charleston-Kanawha Housing. The rent they pay is based on 30% of their monthly-adjusted income and all basic utilities are paid.

Charleston-Kanawha Housing manages six family communities and four high-rise communities as well as scattered sites throughout the City of Charleston. These communities provide homes for more than 2000 residents.

Resident Services

Neighborhood Networks Program Charleston-Kanawha Housing established computer centers in all the public housing communities through a previously funded Neighborhood Networks Program.  West Virginia State University's Land Grant Division has kept the program operational through alternate funding in the high-rise communities and several of the family developments.  These computer centers give residents access to the Internet and to computer skills training as well as free time on the computers during posted lab hours.

After School Program – Charleston-Kanawha Housing offers after-school programs in two of the family communities. These programs give children a place to go after school to get homework assistance
and tutoring.

Family Self-Sufficiency - Charleston-Kanawha Housing offers a Family Self-Sufficiency, FSS, program for public housing residents.  The FSS Coordinator is available to assist residents and connect them to services relating to job training, education, homeownership, personal counseling, credit counseling and more.

Senior Services – Charleston-Kanawha Housing employs a full-time Senior Services Coordinator for elderly and disabled residents primarily in the high-rise communities. The Service Coordinator is available to assist residents and connect them to services.

Safety & SecurityCharleston-Kanawha Housing employs a full-time Safety & Security Officer to coordinate all police/focus patrol activities in Charleston-Kanawha Housing developments. The Security Officer also provides trainings for the residents and oversees/monitors the security cameras and equipment located in each development.
